We promote credit unions' legislative agenda, review hundreds of bills each year, and provide credit union leaders with opportunities to meet with legislators. Federal Government Affairs

California and Nevada's voice in Washington D.C. The Leagues are the only Leagues with a full time staff dedicated to working with Congress, Government Agencies, and Federal Regulators. The resources in this area will help you keep informed of the latest developments and credit union priorities.

State Advocacy

State Government Advocacy efforts brings the voice of credit unions to Sacramento and Carson City. Our advocacy team works daily with elected officials, staff, the executive offices, gubernatorial appointees, and the decision-makers of California and Nevada. This area will keep you updated on all advocacy efforts at the state level of Government.

Leagues Fill Key Position
In a direct response to members' increasing concerns about regulatory burdens, the California and Nevada Credit Union Leagues recently created and filled a key position to communicate with state and federal regulators on how proposed rules impact credit union operations—and ultimately credit union members.

Sharon Lindeman, vice president of regulatory advocacy for the Leagues, began her new role in mid-March after 21 years of serving in various compliance capacities at SchoolsFirst FCU.

"Our goal is to mobilize credit unions and help ensure their voice is heard in the rule-making process," Lindeman said about her new role at the Leagues. "The more credit unions are involved in the rule-making process and sharing their comments and relevant concerns, the more regulators consider how a regulation will affect the industry."

Her top three objectives are to create and maintain effective relationships with regulators, build upon the timeliness of providing regulatory information to member credit unions, and spearhead the ongoing development of PowerComment. Named for its powerful interface in connecting users with the regulatory comment process, PowerComment is a new online forum currently in its final testing stages that will provide a platform for reviewing proposed rules, asking questions of League staff or fellow credit unions, and instantly submitting personalized comment letters.

"We want to foster involvement in the comment process so we can help shape regulations and minimize their impact to credit unions," Lindeman said. "It's pertinent that credit unions are involved in the regulatory process and have their voice heard. Together, we can improve regulations through expanding involvement in the process."

In her most recent position at SchoolsFirst FCU—manager of operations compliance—Lindeman was active in the regulatory rule-making process, drafting comment letters on proposed rules by the National Credit Union Administration, Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, and other agencies. She held several different compliance and audit positions at the credit union from 1991-2013.

Grassroots Advocacy efforts connects you to your government. Whether issues arise at the Federal or State level, you can be an advocate for your credit union by participating in our programs. Using traditional Grassroots tactics, the Leagues connects you to our cause.
 
PAC Programs

Political Action Committees are organized for the purpose of raising and spending money to elect and defeat candidates, representing business, labor or ideological interests.

Talking Points
If your credit union would like talking points for an issue, such as member business lending (MBL) or supplemental capital, the Leagues' Consumer Advocacy Department can develop one to suit your particular needs.
