A group of exceptional leaders were recognized during the Credit Union Awards Ceremony on Wednesday for their remarkable service to the credit union movement and their members during the California and Nevada Credit Union Leagues’ REACH 2018 conference in Hollywood, CA.

From political advocacy on behalf of the entire industry to personal involvement in the lives of fellow peers and their credit union members, these special leaders have gone above and beyond the call of duty in their line of work.

The Leagues and system partners/affiliates recognize leaders with honorable distinctions every year at the state and national levels, as their contributions and achievements have made a huge impact on those whom they work alongside and serve. The following are this year’s extraordinary individuals within a decades-long movement in California and Nevada who continue putting “members first” through their actions:

Leagues’ CU Awards

  • LEO H. SHAPIRO LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT AWARD: Ron McDaniel, California CU (He is being recognized for his more than 40 years of service, including CEO of California CU since 2004, and for being such a strong advocate. Among his accomplishments include serving as part of the League ATM Task Force from 1980 – 1982 at a time when most credit unions didn’t have ATMs and there were no nationwide ATM networks that credit unions could join. McDaniel played a crucial role in helping conceive the idea of creating a nationwide ATM network, which eventually led to the CO-OP Network system and “shared branching.” He also participated in the National Credit Union Administration’s (NCUA) pilot “share draft” program, which created the first checking accounts for credit union members. As CEO of Point Mugu FCU, he was also instrumental in the passage of the H.R. 1151, the Credit Union Membership Access Act, in 1998. For his tireless efforts on behalf of credit unions, McDaniel received the League’s Distinguished Service Award in 1990, the League’s Lifetime Award for his legislative/regulatory advocacy in 2016, and the Credit Union National Association’s (CUNA) Buck Levin award in 2016.
