CALIFORNIA AND NEVADA CREDIT UNION LEAGUES PRESENTS UNSUNG HERO AWARD TO JOHN WALLING
Christian Community CU CEO Recognized For Work in Industry
December 06, 2012

For his long-time work and commitment to the credit union industry, the California and Nevada Credit Union Leagues recently named Christian Community Credit Union President and CEO John Walling as a 2012 recipient of the Unsung Hero Award. The award honors deserving individuals within the credit union industry with at least 20 years of service who also have made significant contributions in the community.

Leagues’ Board Member and First Entertainment CU Director of Compliance Linda Walmsley presented Walling with the award November 27 at a Christian Community CU board meeting held at the credit union headquarters in San Dimas, CA.

“I’m truly honored to receive the Unsung Hero award. It has been a wonderful and meaningful journey to be part of the credit union movement through the years. It is through the collaborative effort of our hard-working staff, supportive management, and a forward-thinking board that Christian Community Credit Union has remained strong and stable,” said Walling. “I’m thankful for the opportunities God has given me to serve here at the credit union as well as on various boards and committees within the credit union industry and Christian organizations. To see how we’ve been able to help our members become better stewards and achieve their financial goals is a joy and a blessing!”

Walling was selected for the honor for his years of leadership at Christian Community CU. In June 1972, Walling started out as assistant manager at what was then American Baptist CU. At that time, Christian Community CU’s assets just surpassed $7 million with more than 5,700 members. He later became general manager in 1978. Then in 1984, he was named president and CEO. Under Walling’s leadership, Christian Community CU has grown to more than $550 million in assets and serves more than 29,500 churches, ministries, and their members in more than 100 countries. In June 2012, Walling celebrated his 40th anniversary with the credit union.

During Walling’s tenure, the credit union established a church loan program, which has provided millions of dollars in financing to hundreds of churches across the nation. He also implemented “The Card that Gives to Missions" program, which has given more than $3 million for missions and ministry projects in the U.S. and worldwide. Christian Community also provides more than $40,000 a year for college and seminary students to pursue their educational goals.

In addition to his work with the credit union, Walling has served on the board of the California Credit Union ATM Task Force and has been a member of the League’s Competitive Task Force and Fiscal Affairs committees. He’s also a long-time board member of PSCU Financial Services and has held committee roles with Rainbow Acres, Cornerstone Retirement Ministries, Mission Aviation Fellowship, and his local church.

The Unsung Hero Award, established by the Leagues’ Historical Preservation Committee, is now coordinated by the League’s Awards Committee. Individuals, chapters, and other League-affiliated organizations, both in California and Nevada, are encouraged to nominate deserving recipients.
