California State Capital To Be Flooded with More than 800 Credit Union Staff and Members on April 7
March 26, 2013

The second annual Credit Union SacTown 10 Mile Run will take place Sunday April 7 in downtown Sacramento, CA to raise money for Children’s Miracle Network hospitals in California and Nevada.

The race, designed to increase national awareness of credit unions, will take place the same day as the 41st Annual Credit Union Cherry Blossom Ten-Mile Run in Washington D.C. It is part of the Credit Union Miracle Day “Family of Races.”

In its first year, SacTown 10 raised more than $140,000 for CMN hospitals. Children's Hospital & Research Center Oakland used the funds it received to support its Pedi Rehab department, specifically for rehab equipment, such as specialized wheelchairs, according to Tina L. Evans, director at Children's Hospital & Research Center Foundation in Oakland. And at UC Davis Children's Hospital in Sacramento, the money went to support its child life programs, such as music therapy; research, and equipment, said Jacquelyn Mills, director of development.

“We are honored once again to be a partner in this effort to showcase how credit unions are making a difference,” said California and Nevada Credit Union Leagues President and CEO Diana Dykstra, who sits on the national advisory board of Credit Unions for Kids and the Credit Union Miracle Day board.

California and Nevada credit unions have raised nearly $164,000 so far this year. Major sponsors include CO-OP Financial Services (Rancho Cucamonga, CA); The Golden 1 Credit Union (Sacramento); Patelco Credit Union (Pleasanton, CA); San Francisco Fire Credit Union; San Mateo Credit Union (Redwood City, CA); SchoolsFirst Federal Credit Union (Santa Ana, CA); Travis Credit Union (Vacaville, CA); Xceed Financial Federal Credit Union (El Segundo, CA); CU Direct Corporation (Ontario, CA); CUNA Mutual Group; Intuit; and Vining Sparks.

“I am so proud of the credit unions, business partners, volunteers, and employees that stepped up to sponsor the SacTown Ten-Mile Run financially this year,” said Patsy Van Ouwerkerk, president and CEO of Travis CU, and chairman of the event’s credit union sponsorship committee. “Not only did we exceed the dollar amount raised over last year, through our fundraising efforts we were able to increase the awareness of the CMN hospitals in our local communities and the difference they make in children’s lives every day. We are pleased that every dollar donated goes back to help these local children’s hospitals.”

More than 1,300 racers, including 652 credit union employees and members, are scheduled to participate. And more than 200 credit union volunteers are expected to work the event.

“Coordinating an event of this size takes a team effort,” said Sherry Cordonnier, director of corporate relations at Travis and co-chairman of the event’s volunteer committee. “We thank everyone on or along the course who make the CU SacTown 10 such a tremendous success. Credit union volunteers are a valuable part of the race, and we literally can’t do it without them.”

The 2013 Credit Union SacTown 10 will kick off with a craft day and news conference on Friday, April 5 at UC Davis Children’s Hospital. Dykstra and SacTown 10 Committee Chairman John Pamer, CEO of Concord, CA-based Diablo Valley Federal Credit Union will present CMN with a check representing the money raised for children’s hospitals. Travis and The Golden 1 are scheduled to provide piggybanks, coloring books, and stuffed mascots for the children.
