Winning T-Shirt Available for Purchase
Financial Center CU had a successful first annual CU T’s Design Competition, with six entries coming from California. Receiving 184 votes out of 481 that were cast, Desert Valleys FCU Marketing Coordinator and Teller Rebecca Peavey won this year’s competition.

Peavey defined her vision through three critical principles of the credit union: The credit union cooperative financial model, the united support and defense of credit unions through political advocacy, and finally the united mission of service to our members and communities.

“I felt these served as a good representation on how credit unions are united for good,” said Peavey. “How everything comes back around and has an effect on one another. ‘Reaching Out-Returning Assets-Ready to Serve’ played very well off of the ‘Reduce-Reuse-Recycle’ tag line that is associated with the symbol.”

“I was proud to see Rebecca taking a stand toward political advocacy and she had some great ideas on how to produce some social media to get votes,” said Desert Valleys FCU CEO Eric Bruen. “When she informed me she had won the competition, I was so impressed to see how the vision of advocacy was being perpetuated not only to our members, but within our team.”

Peavey and the Desert Valleys team plan on celebrating their win by wearing their shirts with pride with the rest of the credit union world on Oct. 17, International Credit Union Day.

The winning shirt has now been unveiled in the CU T’s virtual store at www.icink.com/stores/CUT. T-shirts will be just $12, plus tax and shipping, with each shirt sold resulting in 50 percent of t-shirt price being donated to the California Credit Union League Political Action Committee (CCUL-PAC). Shirts ordered by October 1 will be delivered in time for International Credit Union Day.

In its inaugural year, CU T’s featured three designs created by Financial Center CU. But CEO Michael Duffy wanted to open the design process this year to help increase participation in the project. Duffy increased the effort last year by partnering with I.C. Ink, turning a small internal promotion into an industry movement. This was made possible thanks to long-time credit union supporter and promotions/apparel company, I.C. Ink and Owner Tom Sousa.

“It’s important for everyone in the industry – from the executives down to the frontline staff – to get behind the credit union movement,” Duffy said. “Most people don’t want to be lectured about the merits of the cooperative structure. By doing something creative and fun, it makes it easier for staff and members to take note of the message.”

With each CU T tee-shirt purchased, a portion of the proceeds is donated to the California Credit Union League Political Action Committee (CCUL-PAC). Donations to the CCUL-PAC are not tax deductible under state or federal law.

Member Business Lending Rule
As reported earlier today in the California and Nevada Credit Union Leagues’ Advocacy Blog, members of Congress from the California and Nevada Congressional Delegation continue to show their support for credit unions. This morning, Rep. Dina Titus (D-Las Vegas) submitted a support letter to the NCUA for their proposed revisions to the member-business lending (MBL) regulation. Titus joins 8 other Members of Congress from our two states who have responded favorably to MBL rule.

As recently reported in the California and Nevada Credit Union Leagues’ Advocacy Blog, last week on Capitol Hill, Rep. Juan Vargas (D-Chula Vista) led 11 of his colleagues from California and Nevada in sending a letter to the NCUA raising on-going concerns with the agency's risk- based capital (2) proposal. The Vargas letter was initiated by a request from the CA & NV Leagues and was advocated as a top priority during the Leagues' Hike the Hill to Washington, D.C. last week.

NCUA Redefines Small CUs updated 09/18/15 10:17 am
Threshold Raised to $100MM in Assets
The NCUA Board voted unanimously in favor of four supervisory actions Thursday, including one that will change the definition of “small entity” in the Regulatory Flexibility Act from credit unions with less than $50 million in assets to credit unions with less than $100 million in assets.

At its open board meeting, the agency first approved the expansion of the community charter for the $342 million Charlotte Metro Federal Credit Union in Charlotte, N.C., to include 10 counties in the Charlotte metro area. The credit union previously served Mecklenburg County only.

Increased CA/NV Backing of H.R. 1188

The Cooperative Trust, in partnership with Credit Union National Association (CUNA), is now accepting applications for Crash the GAC 2016. Those interested in the program—which provides scholarships for up-and-coming credit union professionals to attend the CUNA Governmental Affairs Conference—must submit their applications by October 31, 2015. New this year, applicants will be required to submit a 60 second video instead of an essay.

Harmful Bill Thwarted
As recently reported in the California and Nevada Credit Union Leagues’ Advocacy Blog, the League's advocacy team defeated SB 308 (Wieckowski D-Fremont) which would have dramatically increased the amount of assets a debtor could shield through bankruptcy leaving credit unions and their members holding the bag. The bill received only 21 votes on the Assembly floor vote—20 votes short of what the bill needed for passage. The League's advocacy team will continue to monitor this and other legislation through the last day of this year's legislative session on September 11th.
