Altura CU employees, for the fourth consecutive year, assisted at the Riverside County Academic Decathlon, with 11 staff members serving as proctors during the "Super Quiz" portion of the event. More than 180 students in teams from 19 high schools competed in the event, which includes writing essays, delivering prepared and impromptu speeches, being interviewed by judges, and participating in the "Super Quiz." Altura CU also established a fund—and donated the first $5,000—to assist the family of San Bernardino County Sheriff Deputy Jeremiah MacKay, who was killed Feb. 12 in a shootout with Christopher Dorner, a former Los Angeles police officer who at the time made news headlines for his killing spree. Additionally, Altura CU awarded two Riverside, CA residents $500 each for using their Altura Visa Debit Cards to make purchases—part of a promotional effort by the credit union to point out the convenience of using its debit card.
