Credit Union of Southern California gained a "special" new member due to a question-and-answer session during the California and Nevada Credit Union Leagues' 2012 Annual Meeting and Convention last November in Las Vegas, where Carla Canales, 24, was part of a panel discussion of young non-credit union members. At the time, CU of SoCal CEO Dave Gunderson reached out to Canales—a management assistant with the Los Angeles County Department of Public Works—while she was on stage, offering to put $100 in her account if she would join the credit union, which has a branch in her employer's building. Canales ended up joining the credit union in early 2013. Additionally, Credit Union of Southern California is now offering mobile bill pay to its members, allowing those with Apple and Android mobile devices to transfer funds, pay bills, and schedule payments directly from their mobile banking app.
