RMJ TO HOLD DONOR APPRECIATION GALA
updated 06/27/13 10:12 AM
Foundation Ceases Beacon Awards
The Richard Myles Johnson Foundation will introduce a Donor Appreciation Gala to recognize those who have supported the foundation this year.

This will be in lieu of its annual Beacon Awards Gala. The foundation has decided to no longer offer its Beacon Award honoring exemplary financial education programs. The Donor Appreciation Gala will be held on Sunday, Oct. 27 (the day before the start of the California and Nevada Credit Union Leagues’ Annual Meeting and Convention) at the iconic Transamerica Pyramid building, prominently situated at the gateway to San Francisco’s Financial District.

“With this reception, we can take the opportunity to thank and recognize the contributions of credit unions and organizations whose support has helped the foundation launch its successful 'Bite of Reality' program,” said Tena Lozano, RMJ Foundation executive director.

Bite of Reality is a two-and-a-half-hour, hands-on simulation that appeals to teens while giving them a taste of real-world financial realities. For more information on the program, click here. Since its launch last year, a number of credit unions and chapters have held Bite of Reality fairs throughout California and Nevada. This group also will be recognized at the gala.

Invites will be sent out, but anyone can sign up to attend the event when registering for the Leagues’ Annual Meeting and Convention.

The Foundation encourages credit unions to enter the Desjardins Youth Financial Education Award, a program similar to the Beacon Awards, and which recognizes model credit union efforts to teach personal finance concepts and skills to members and nonmembers under age 18. First-place state winners in each asset category will receive a plaque in recognition and their entries will be forwarded to CUNA for the national-level competition. Additionally, credit unions may enter either the Dora Maxwell /Community Outreach or Louise Herring awards programs. Financial literacy advocacy programs are eligible for recognition under Maxwell/Community Outreach, while in-school branch operations are now eligible for recognition under Louise Herring. For information and entry forms, contact Leagues Public Affairs and Consumer Advocacy Specialist Tina Ramos-Ingold at tinar@ccul.org.
