SkyOne FCU employees showed their support for Children's Miracle Network Hospitals by wearing jeans on Miracle Jeans Day in September, raising nearly $2,400 through fun and exciting fundraising activities. SkyOne FCU also went on a mission to "go green" during Columbus Day, where staff were challenged to reduce paper clutter, clean email inboxes, and free up digital space on computers.

Xceed Financial CU was one of several credit unions participating in research administered by Filene Research Institute, which recently released a report showing how SaveUp—the first free nationwide rewards program encouraging Americans to save money and pay down debt—had a positive impact on savings behavior among those who participated in a six-month pilot study. The research also revealed that credit unions increased member engagement and loyalty.

On Oct. 18, International Credit Union Day, the California and Nevada Credit Union Leagues hosted a group of 30 visitors from Jiangsu Province CU in China. The group learned about the U.S. credit union movement, League operations, and California and Nevada credit unions. They also visited California Center CU in Ontario, CA near the Leagues' headquarters.

In celebration of International Credit Union Day, SchoolsFirst FCU hosted a group from Kamphangpeth Teachers Savings and Credit Cooperative in Kamphaeng Phet, Thailand. The cooperative visited SchoolsFirst FCU to learn about products and services for school employees, management best practices, board governance, and other topics. The visit concluded with a tour of the SchoolsFirst FCU's flagship branch office and a reception where both leadership teams shared ideas and enjoyed a cake featuring the International Credit Union Day logo.

The Golden 1 CU is launching a new college scholarship program for members and their dependents in three amounts depending on their schooling status and plans: $1,000, $2,500, and $5,000. The Golden 1 CU also held a free Community Shred Event at its operations center in Sacramento and helped 2,700 individuals shred more than 139,000 pounds of confidential information.

Through inspiring decorations and exhilarating entertainment, the California Credit Union League's Sequoia Chapter transported more than 200 attendees of its Sept. 28 Fresno PAC (Political Action Committee) event to a Hawaiian luau, complete with hula dancers, a fire dancer, and music from the islands. The event, which Leagues' President and CEO Diana Dykstra spoke at, raised more than $14,000.

Redwood CU recently completed its 2012 United Way workplace giving campaign, raising more than $95,000 for local nonprofit organizations. Additionally, the credit union's staff volunteered in four counties for United Way's "Day and Week of Caring, helping clean up barns, working in a food bank, building picnic tables, and repainting a kids club.

Patelco CU President and CEO Ken Burns recently presented a check for $27,800 to Children's Hospital and Research Center in Oakland, CA, which was the portion that credit unions in the Bay Area raised from the Credit Unions 4 Kids Wine Auction. Burns also serves as the chairman of this hospital's Credit Unions 4 Kids Advisory Board.

Arrowhead CU staff and members—as part of the ArrowCares team—contributed more than $4,800 toward the Fifth Annual Believe Walk efforts, while also walking in the event. The team of 108 was among the largest at the event, walking together from State Street to the Redlands Bowl in Redlands, CA, all in matching "ArrowCares" team T-shirts. The 5K walk supports research efforts to fight cancer.

Star readers named the credit union the number one bank/savings-and-loan for services in west Ventura County in the publication's 2012 Readers Choice highlight, and Reporter readers named the credit union their "number one financial institution" in the newspaper's 27th Annual Best of Ventura County section.

LBS Financial CU worked with three local school districts this past summer to collect supplies for the 2012-2013 school year, where credit union members and non-members dropped off supplies, supplemented by purchased items from the credit union and its employees. LBS Financial CU collected more than $1,000 from employees and matched this donation, thus spending $2,000 on supplemental supplies for the effort.

California and Nevada credit unions, along with the California and Nevada Credit Union Leagues, supported Miracle Jeans Day in September, with 43 credit unions from California participating and four in Nevada. Money raised by credit unions that reported how much was raised totalled more than $29,000 in California as of early October, and more than $10,500 in Nevada. Nationwide, 538 credit unions and 22 state credit union leagues participated in the effort, which raises money for Children's Miracle Network Hospitals.
