CU of Southern California made history in the third quarter of 2012 as it consummated mergers with three local credit unions over a 63-day period. The credit union integrated Inland Empire CU, North Orange County CU, and Family 1 FCU to form a united organization with $700 million in assets serving nearly 55,000 members.

South Bay CU employees ditched the professional attire to support Miracle Jeans Day to raise money for Children’s Miracle Network (CMN) Hospitals. CUNA Mutual Group was selected by InformationWeek editors as the winner of the Revenue Generation category for this industry award. Also, CUNA Mutual Group’s Credit Union Center campus in Madison, Wisconsin was visited in August by a group of cross-country cyclists on a trip to promote member business lending and create awareness of the growing cooperative and credit union movements. The group began their cycling journey in San Francisco and finished in Amherst, Massachusetts on September 1.

Patelco CU hosted a blood drive at its Pleasanton, CU headquarters to support the American Red Cross, which benefitted patients at hospitals and blood transfusion centers in its community. The effort resulted in 29 units of blood being donated.

 

In Sri Lanka, getting a bank loan requires collateral and salary slips, marking loans nearly impossible for fishermen such as Sebastian Lusion. Thanks to a credit union loan, Lusion was able to repair his boat and continue providing for his wife and three children.

San Francisco FCU donated $1,500 in support of the Tenth Annual Bowl-A-Strike for Seniors event held by Little Brothers—Friends of the Elderly of San Francisco for future holiday events, where volunteers will provide home deliveries and friendly visits on Thanksgiving and Christmas Day to more than 500 isolated seniors. San Francisco FCU also celebrated the grand re-opening of its main branch in September, which included renovations that will help serve members better, such as a newly opened second floor, "green" energy efficient design technologies, and new elements to match the credit union's updated brand.

Altura CU collected backpacks full of new school supplies from members and employees throughout its branches in support of Riverside County's "Fill a Back Pack" Program—administered by the Department of Mental Health's Parent Support and Training Program. Members and staff filled 11 boxes with school supplies, and 15 backpacks were donated as well. Altura CU also recently launched a checking account designed to help people get back on their feet financially. The new Reliance Checking Account addresses the local Inland Empire economy still lagging in its return to normalcy, and is designed to help the individuals caught in its wake. The new checking account comes with a regular Visa Debit Card, online banking, mobile banking, and eStatements.

Redwood CU recently partnered with Shred-It, Integrity Shred, and Computer Recycling Center to help 1,500 people prevent identity theft at their 6th annual community Shred-A-Thon. Attendees shredded approximately 22.5 tons of sensitive documents, and recycled a truckload of e-waste items. Additionally, nearly 1,000 pounds of canned food were collected to benefit the Redwood Empire Food Bank during the Shred-A-Thon.

First Financial CU has created a new, comprehensive one-year Management Training Program designed for recent college graduates, otherwise known as Polu Nalu ("Blue Wave" in Hawaiian). The credit union recruited and hired five recent graduates from local universities who will be completely immersed in the credit union's daily operations.

Family 1 FCU in Placentia merged into CU of Southern California, based in Whittier. The merger was approved by California Department of Financial Institutions (DFI) May 11 and became effective July 2. Also, Inland Empire CU in Pomona was approved by the DFI to merge into CU of Southern California on June 16. The merger took effect July 2.

Patelco CU's Danville branch got into the Independence Day spirit by entering a float in the Northern California town’s annual 4th of July Parade. The branch has participated in the parade for the past five years, and the theme for this parade was: “SMALLTOWN DANVILLE–BIG HEART." Patelco’s float was a salute to Children‘s Hospital Oakland and the Children’s Miracle Network.

WestStar CU is collecting smiles to benefit Opportunity Village, a not-for-profit organization that serves people with intellectual disabilities. For each smile gathered, WestStar will give $1 to Opportunity Village, with A Mile of Smiles roughly equating to nearly $16,000 in donations. Since August 15, credit union and community members have submitted their smiles in photographs, which are posted on a custom website, forming A Mile of Smiles. Once a mile is reached, that donation will be made to Opportunity Village.

San Francisco FCU President and CEO Steven Stapp was recently announced by Catalyst Corporate Federal Credit Union as the latest addition to its Asset Liability Committee (ALCO). Stapp’s appointment gives former members of Western Bridge Corporate additional representation within Catalyst’s governance structure. Also, the credit union recently donated $1,500 in support of the Tenth Annual Bowl-A-Strike for Seniors event held by Little Brothers—Friends of the Elderly, San Francisco. Five credit union employees went to Presidio Bowl in San Francisco for a day of bowling, food, prizes, and fundraising. Funds raised from this event will go directly towards holiday events to benefit more than 500 isolated elders.
