Christian Community CU employees are participating in Operation Christmas Child this holiday season, donating 85 shoeboxes filled with toys, school supplies, hygiene items, clothing, and other items to the effort. The program brings joy and hope to boys and girls around the world through gift-filled shoeboxes. Also, the credit union recently appointed Dale Torry as a member of its Supervisory Committee.

Financial Partners CU donated $5,000 to the Boeing Aerospace Leadership Chapter’s (BALC) 2012 National Management Association (NMA) Scholarship Competition on Oct. 17 at the Seal Beach Old Ranch Country Club. Since 1995, the credit union has given more than $85,000 to support BALC’s initiatives and scholarship contest.

At the California Credit Union League's (CCUL) Annual Business Meeting on Nov. 14 in Las Vegas, San Diego County CU President and CEO Teresa Halleck was reelected as chairman of the board. After serving in 2012 as CCUL chair, Halleck will serve for a second consecutive term throughout 2013. Also elected were Xceed Financial CU President and CEO Teresa Freeborn as vice chairman; and CalCom FCU, City of Downey FCU, and Mattel FCU President and CEO Jon Hernandez as an at-large director. Immediate past chairman SkyOne FCU President and CEO Eileen Rivera will serve in 2013 as an ex officio member of the board. As a result of recent changes to CCUL's board governance structure, there are now 10 seats on the board and three on the Executive Committee, and one chairman seat and one vice chairman seat.

At the Nevada Credit Union League's (NCUL) Annual Business Meeting on Nov. 12 in Las Vegas, Clark County CU CEO Wayne Tew was installed as the board's new chairman. Outgoing Board Chairman and Great Basin FCU CEO Dennis Flannigan was recognized for his efforts over the past two years. Also in attendance were former California League president David Chatfield and Credit Union National Association President and CEO Bill Cheney, who were both recognized for their leadership in the movement. Also, the board passed a resolution to elect directors on an "at-large" basis rather than by district, and to decrease the number of board seats from seven to five.

South Bay CU is sponsoring a holiday food drive and toy donation in its Redondo Beach and Torrance locations. Branches will be collecting new, unwrapped toys now through Dec. 13 for distribution to Cheer for Children, an all-volunteer organization that helps children in the South Bay. Branches will be collecting non-perishable items now through Dec. 19 for distribution to St. Paul’s United Methodist Church, serving families in Redondo Beach, Hawthorne, and Torrance.

Farmers Insurance Group FCU is one of three credit unions across the nation that recently purchased a principal-ownership controlling stake in Business Partners, a full-service member business lending credit union service organization (CUSO) owned by several credit unions. The National Credit Union Administration, which took control of the CUSO as the liquidating agent of Telesis Community CU, recently reached an agreement to sell the controlling interest to a managing-partner group consisting of the three credit unions. The other two controlling-stake owners are Great Lakes CU (Illinois) and Public Service CU (Colorado).

Xceed Financial CU, Wescom CU, California CU, and SkyOne FCU collaborated to raise more than $34,000 for Southern California children’s hospitals on Oct. 18, which is International Credit Union Day. Xceed Financial CU and Wescom CU joined forces to develop and promote the event, communicate with members, and solicit participation. For the fundraiser, titled "Create Miracles with Your Card," each participating credit union donated 25 cents every time a member used a check card or credit card on International Credit Union Day. Funds went to Credit Unions for Kids, a nationwide alliance of credit unions supporting Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals.

SkyOne FCU announced it would help members in the path of Hurricane Sandy with zero-percent annual percentage rate disaster loans up to $5,000 and would make the funds available within one business day of the member's request. The credit union also waives penalties for early withdrawal from certificates, and offers a 90-day payment extension on loans, a free supply of replacement checks, and a free replacement credit, ATM, or check card.

The Golden 1 CU's Terrance Shelton won the Chi Phi Delta First Place Award at this year's Credit Union National Association (CUNA) ELLy Training Awards, which recognize outstanding credit union training programs and training professionals. The Chi Phi Delta award represents the best development of a Credit Union University, and its effect on staff learning and performance, using CUNA's Center for Professional Development products as the foundation.

Arrowhead CU staff honored Homeless Awareness Month by digging into their own pantries and filling 250 bags with groceries for the homeless at a local organization, Mary's Mercy Center. The effort was spearheaded by Doribel Martinez, who works in collections for the credit union.

Kinecta FCU's 39th annual Holiday Food Drive provided more than 1,000 low-income families with a bag of traditional Thanksgiving food items, along with a $75 gift certificate. Employees of Kinecta FCU and its subsidiary Nix Financial collaborated with more than 35 non-profit organizations and churches in a countywide effort to benefit deserving families. More than $53,000 was raised through member, employee, and customer donations at Kinecta and Nix locations, along with corporate sponsors which included NuVision FCU.

Financial Partners CU recently launched its free mobile bill-pay application, giving members the capability to pay their bills anywhere, anytime using their smartphone. The credit union's mobile bill-pay application is available on any of today’s mobile apps on iPhone, Android, Blackberry, and the credit union’s mobile site: The credit union also recently launched a unique Platinum Rewards Card program with non-expiring rewards, no annual fees, and low rates.

Christian Community CU donated $10,000 for Hurricane Sandy relief efforts through American Baptist Churches USA's "One Great Hour of Sharing" offering. The amount will go towards immediate disaster relief and long-term reconstruction in the U.S. and the Caribbean. Members can also donate their credit- and debit-card reward points towards Hurricane Sandy relief. Also, the credit union's employees held their first-ever Office Olympics in conjunction with the 2012 Summer Olympics and raised $500 for Special Olympics Southern California.

First Financial CU staff donated more than $600 in October to the Susan G. Komen Foundation in support of Breast Cancer Awareness Month. The credit union has donated nearly $15,000 so far this year to various charities, and nearly 250 pounds of supplies to deployed troops serving overseas. It also hosted two blood drives with the American Red Cross, where employees donated more than 50 pints of blood. Other causes that First Financial CU have participated in this year include the Los Angeles Downtown YMCA Stair Climb, Revlon Run-Walk, Race for the Cure, Irvine Mud Run, and Kids For Cancer Walk.

SAFE CU recently introduced its Perfect Cents Savings program, where members collectively saved more than $10 million since 2009. The free service automatically rounds up the amount of a member's purchase using their SAFE Visa Debit Card, and transfers the excess into the savings product of their choice.

Christian Community CU's "Cards That Give to Missions" program donated $52,000 for launching a village in northern Thailand, a project in partnership with the Integrated Tribal Development Program. The funds will provide water and sanitation resources, build a school and health clinic, and provide micro-enterprise lending.

KeyPoint CU donated $710 to Dublin Partners in Education during the organization's annual Celebrity Waiter fundraiser event in October, which was attended by more than 200 business and community leaders. The money was generated through a Kids Savings Account campaign that KeyPoint CU created, where $10 was contributed for every new account opened at the credit union's Dublin, CA branch between January-May 2012.

Financial Partners CU Vice President of Marketing Anne Legg had her MBA thesis selected for publication and presentation at the 2012 International Cooperative Summit in Quebec, Canada this past October. Legg's thesis, entitled "Creating a New Credit Union Sustainability Business Model," explores sustainability through application of several emerging business strategies, and seeks a solution for sustainability by examining international credit union systems, in addition to the cooperative grocery and farming industries.

He will develop strategic communications plans and activities to promote workforce coordination and continued mission alignment within the credit union. Redwood CU Branch Manager Alfredo Pedroza (Sonoma, CA) was recently voted to the Napa City Council. Redwood CU is also accepting contributions to the Red Cross Hurricane Relief Fund to directly assist those affected by Hurricane Sandy on the east coast. All Redwood CU branch locations have been designated as collection sites for donations from members and the community.
