Credit unions and individuals throughout California and Nevada contributed more than $16,000, of which the California and Nevada Credit Union Leagues matched $10,000, to support the construction of a new facility for Busia Compassionate Centre, an orphanage in rural western Kenya supported by the World Council of Credit Unions (WOCCU). League member credit unions that donated to the Busia campaign include CoastHills FCU, Greater Nevada CU, KeyPoint CU, Kinecta FCU, Meriwest CU, Mission FCU, North Island CU, Redwood CU, San Mateo CUUnited Health CU, and Xceed Financial CU. Instrumental to raising awareness and funds for the Busia campaign was Taylor York, 13, daughter of CoastHills FCU President and CEO Jeff York, along with USC CU and several credit union CEOs, including Jeff Napper (LBS Financial CU), Teresa Freeborn (Xceed Financial FCU), Terry Halleck (San Diego County CU), Wally Murray (Greater Nevada CU), Bill Cheney (CUNA president and CEO), and Hugh Rafferty (CoastHills FCU board chairman).

Nearly 30 children of employees of various L.A.-area credit unions recently participated in the Bite of Reality program offered by the Richard Myles Johnson Foundation (RMJ) and California and Nevada Youth Involvement Network (CNYIN). The simulation program is designed to teach young people the basics of finance in a fun and interactive way. The Jan. 12 event was hosted by the Leagues’ Beach Cities Chapter, Kinecta FCU, and SkyOne FCU, and featured volunteers from Kinecta and SkyOne, as well as from American Airlines FCU, Farmers Insurance Group FCU, Nikkei CU, Southern California Postal CU, Wescom CU, and a Glendale FCU member.

In California and Nevada, 128 member credit unions of the California and Nevada Credit Union Leagues started 2013 with checks earned through their participation in the Sprint Credit Union Member Discount Program. For 2012, the participating credit unions earned more than $1.3 million in marketing incentives, and members of those credit unions saved $40 million throughout the term of the program.

The Applied Research Institute and the California and Nevada Credit Union Leagues commissioned a new report highlighting opportunities for credit unions in California and Nevada to grow their membership through service to local Hispanic populations. In California, Hispanics represent 38 percent of the state’s population; 1 in 6 businesses are Hispanic-owned (17 percent); 41 percent are underserved; the state is No. 1 in nation in Hispanic buying power; and Hispanics have $265 billion in disposable income. In Nevada, from 2000 to 2010, the state’s Hispanic growth rate (82 percent) outpaced California (28 percent), Texas (36 percent), and Florida (57 percent); 8 percent of businesses are Hispanic-owned, approximately 18,000; North Las Vegas and Las Vegas have the highest ratio of Hispanic-owned businesses; and more than half (more than 350,000 individuals) are underserved.

It is the eighth consecutive year the credit union service organization has paid dividends to shareholders. At year's end, 1,050 credit unions, serving 34 million members, were using the credit union service organization's lending solutions.

Some 50 military families and friends at two California credit unions recently had the opportunity to connect with loved ones for the holiday season thanks to Operation Best Wishes, a program sponsored by the Defense Credit Union Council, and with assistance from C-Sun Studios. This year, the national tour of Operation Best Wishes covered eight states. The California leg of the tour included stops at Grossmont Schools FCU in El Cajon and Travis Air Force Base in Vacaville. Travis CU hosted the Travis AFB event.

Patelco CU raised more than $30,000 for Credit Unions 4 Kids and Children’s Miracle Network, thanks to nearly 7,000 member and employee donations. The money will be donated to UC Davis Children’s Hospital and Children’s Hospital and Research Center of Oakland to fund equipment, programs, and research. The effort raised money through the sale of $1 snowmen during the recent holiday season. Additionally, Patelco CU launched a CafeGive Facebook app to raise money for the American Red Cross' disaster relief efforts due to Superstorm Sandy on the East Coast. More than $6,500 was raised, with Patelco adding an additional $5,000.

Altura CU member Christina Zavala won $500 as part of a special loan promotion offered at the end of 2012. Individuals who applied for an auto loan during the promotion were automatically entered into the “Find the Keys to a KiaSweepstakes" contest, and Zavala was the finalist randomly chosen among the entries. She didn’t select the key-containing envelope, but still won $500. Additionally, Altura CU members and employees donated nearly 900 non-perishable food items to 10 local charitable organizations as part of its Fifth Annual Holiday Canned Food Drive.

The Golden 1 CU collected nearly 4,250 pounds of food and household necessities from employees and members during its annual company-wide food drive in November. The supplies, as well as $52,500 in monetary donations, were distributed to 15 local and regional food banks throughout California. Also, the credit union has named Lori Allen as vice president of real estate. Allen has worked in the credit union industry for nearly 30 years, and comes to The Golden 1 CU from VyStar CU in Jacksonville, FL, where she was vice president of mortgage lending.

Members and employees contributed more than $3,500 to the fund over the past several weeks, making donations at Redwood CU branches, or via an online banking option. The credit union matched the donations, bringing the total to $7,787.

Volunteers of Southern California Helping Hands (SCHH), a company charity of Credit Union of Southern California, recently surprised kids at Washington Elementary School in Pomona, CA by filling one classroom at a time with new toys. SCHH delivered more than $14,000 in toys for 842 students, as well as Target gift cards to 33 teachers and Starbucks gift cards for all classified staff members at the school.

America's Christian CU donated more than $13,300 to Children's Miracle Network Hospitals, an amount that was matched by CO-OP Financial Services. The funds from the credit union were raised through payroll deductions, a company match, and several fundraising activities. America's Christian CU also participated in the Shoes That Fit project, an effort coordinated by Central City Community Outreach in downtown Los Angeles, where enough money was raised to purchase 55 pairs of shoes for low-income families. Additionally, America's Christian CU bought gifts for 35 needy children served by Our Neighborhood Homework House, a nonprofit providing tutoring and extracurricular activities to kids in the Azusa, CA area.

Coast Central absorbed the Crescent City, CA branch and California memberships. Chetco had been under NCUA conservatorship since September 2011.

Meriwest CU is also utilizing the latest in analytic technologies and electronic marketing to identify members with car loans, mortgages, and credit cards at other institutions, and who would most likely consider switching to Meriwest, all through a series of focused and tailored email campaigns, electronic messaging, and other awareness efforts.

Altura CU continued a holiday tradition recently by raising funds for Riverside County Medical Center’s Pediatrics Units as part of the 23rd Annual Festival of Trees. Fifty local organizations, including Altura CU, each decorated a Christmas tree that was "sold" as part of the event, with the proceeds going to the medical center. Each year, the five-day event attracts more than 30,000 people and raises about $500,000 in proceeds used to purchase much-needed equipment for the children’s units.

Travis CU members and employees recently participated in the Solano and Contra Costa Food Banks annual food drive, The Festival of Trees, Christmas Wish 2012, and the 2012 Children's Miracle Network Holiday Stocking Campaign. Each year, the credit union helps the working poor, seniors, single parents, and the homeless in Solano County through its annual food drive. Credit union employees, members, and the general public are encouraged to bring non-perishable food items to all Travis CU branches in Solano and Contra Costa counties Nov. 15 through Jan. 31. Also, Travis CU was recently announced the winner of the "Best of 2012" award for the seventh year, according to a poll of Vacaville Reporter newspaper readers.

Members 1st CU debuted the Members 1st Cash Mob, a localized effort to support small businesses in Shasta and Tehama counties. The Cash Mob brings community members together to storm the doors of a featured local business at a scheduled date and time each month. Nominations for the featured local business are accepted monthly on the credit union's Facebook page, after which the four most frequently nominated businesses are voted on.

Credit Union of Southern California recently received a visit from 20 credit union presidents from the Xinjiang Bankers Group in Urumqi, China, as part of Cal Poly Pomona’s Global Education Program. The Chinese delegation, sent by their country's government to take best practices from U.S. credit unions back to China, met with President and CEO Dave Gunderson and SVP Michelle Hunter, and toured the credit union's corporate office and Whittier branch.

In 2011, the program helped raise almost $9,000 and 821 pounds of food and toys for the Alameda County Community Food Bank (ACCFB) and Toys for Tots. In 2012, the credit union again asked for donations for Toys for Tots and the ACCFB.

The Golden 1 CU hosted a free community shred event on Nov. 3 at the Sierra Vista Mall in Clovis. The credit union assisted approximately 375 individuals in shredding their private and confidential documents, CDs, and floppy disks, thus helping protect against identity theft and related crimes.

LBS Financial CU employees donated hundreds of toys, gifts, and basic care items to the children, parents, and seniors served by Project Shepherd in Lakewood, CA. The donations were collected during the credit union's annual holiday breakfast at The Grand in Long Beach on Dec. 12 and presented to Project Shepherd.

Eagle Community CU was named a "Top Workplace" by The Orange County Register for the second consecutive year. Eighty-five companies were named Top Orange County Workplaces for 2012 in a survey of more than 22,500 employees.
