A deeper look at what "collaboration" truly means took shape during the Southern California Credit Union Alliance's (SCCUA) Second Annual Collaboration Conference, which focused on how credit unions can drive the philosophy of "working together" to the next level so their members can fully engage with the value provided them. The two-day event attracted 125 credit union executives and vendors in Industry, CA.

San Francisco FCU launched its new Women’s Wealth Initiative, a financial education group for women in the Bay Area. The initial meeting drew 12 participants and focused on unique financial challenges women face, in addition to strategies for meeting money-related goals.

Tucoemas FCU was presented with the Best Practice Award in the area of Business Development and Dealer Relations during the CU Direct 2013 Annual Lending Conference earlier this year. The credit union was one of four recognized for exemplary lending practices and success in 2012.

NuVision FCU and Pacific Resource CU merged on July 1, creating a $1.3 billion credit union with 14 branches and serving 87,000 members primarily throughout Los Angeles and Orange counties.

SAFE CU member Jamie Larson won the credit union's "Free Gas for a Year Sweepstakes," receiving $2,600. The sweepstakes was part of SAFE CU's latest auto loan promotion, where every time a member applied for a new auto loan, applied for the refinance of a loan from another lender, or selected a low-cost vehicle protection plan, he or she was entered to win the estimated valued of gas for a year.

Financial Partners CU, in partnership with the Columbia Memorial Space Center, presented Future Innovators Scholarships to five Warren High School—Downey seniors who have shown an interest in innovation through their participation on the CMSC Robotics Team. The credit union awarded a total of $5,000.

Evangelical Christian CU will host a "Budgeting: Aligning Money and Mission" workshop at the upcoming 2013 National Association of Church Business Administration (NACBA) conference in Charlotte, NC in July, teaching attendees how to build a budget process that assures their church’s spending aligns with its highest priorities, as well as other principles.

Partners FCU announced the grand opening of its newest branch at the Disneyland Resort in Anaheim, CA, which is centrally located in front of the primary "cast" employee entry point serving both Disneyland and Disney California Adventure Resorts. Partners FCU now has two branches at the Disneyland Resort, as well as numerous ATMs.

Xceed Financial CU awarded $10,000 in Romeo Doty Scholarships to 10 high school seniors from Illinois, California, New York, Washington, and Louisiana. The credit union distributes the scholarships annually to honor the memory of Romeo Doty, who served on the credit union’s board for 21 years.

Kern Schools FCU's "Jeans Day" fundraiser collected more than $1,600 for the Oklahoma Credit Union Foundation's Tornado Disaster Relief Fund. The proceeds will help credit union employees victimized by the devastating tornadoes in Oklahoma.

Cal Center CU presented 23-year-old Alyssa Zibell with the 2013 Thomas L. Wagner Scholarship award. Zibell, a junior at San Bernardino Valley College, will use the $800 scholarship to help with studies.

LBS Financial CU awarded scholarships to 32 California students in Long Beach, Lakewood, Cerritos, and surrounding communities for the 2013 school year. This year, 27 high school, two college, and two adult school students received scholarships. LBS Financial CU also offers an annual $1,000 scholarship that could be applied for by any member in their senior year of high school or first three years of college.

Altura CU member Ricardo Luna won $500 through the credit union's year-long "You’re Gonna Love This Card" promotion. Every time Altura CU members make a purchase using their debit card, they are entered for a chance to win a $500 cash prize—and the more a member uses his or her card for purchases, the more times they are entered to win. Altura CU also gave away six iPad Minis in the final week of its "Mini Ways to Win" promotion—a campaign designed to promote the credit union's checking account products. One of the winners was Veronica Lara, a 10-year member.

Christian Community CU celebrated the grand re-opening of its Covina, CA branch with a dedication and ribbon-cutting ceremony in June. The new branch had a complete site redesign and upgrade to its interior and exterior, including new landscape design. Christian Community CU also awarded $52,000 in scholarships to 52 students through its Scholarships for Success Program in 2013.

 

'CREDIT UNIONS UNITE FOR GOOD'

The World Council of Credit Unions has announced this year's International Credit Union (ICU) Day theme is "Credit Unions Unite for Good: A Better Way." It will highlight the impact and benefits of cooperation among credit unions worldwide to better serve members.

 

SMALL BUSINESS CREDIT INITIATIVE

The California and Nevada Credit Union Leagues hosted a focus group recently with the U.S. Treasury Department's State Small Business Credit Initiative (SSBCI), with participation from nine credit unions that either currently engage in small business lending or recently entered the market. The SSBCI requested the meeting to hear from credit unions that do, and do not, participate in these programs in an effort to gather actionable feedback it can use to enhance the programs and increase participation. The agencies requested comment on what works well, what does not, and whether burdens or obstacles exist that prevent participation.
