Al George—who was perhaps the epitome of volunteerism and leadership in the California credit union movement—has passed away. George dedicated his life and career to the greater good of the credit union movement, serving on the North Island CU Board of Directors for more than 60 years. His volunteer credit union activities began in 1948 as a director of San Diego Gas and Electric CU (now Financial 21 CU) while he was a 43-year utility engineer for the company.

Travis CU recently hosted a Legislative Meet-and-Greet with Assemblywoman Susan Bonilla, D-Concord, where Travis CU's CEO and staff educated Bonilla about the vital role Travis plays within the local community. Travis CU also appointed Misun Thompson as senior vice president and COO, promoted Stacy Fifield to senior vice president and chief lending officer, and appointed Teresa Shafer as vice president of human resources and training. Additionally, Travis CU executives, the Yolo Family Resource Center, and Vacaville city officials honored and celebrated the credit union's New Era Tanda program in August—an initiative that implements a savings-and-lending program leveraging a Latin American cultural tradition. Also, Travis CU recently awarded 20 high school students the Mary Keith Duff Memorial Scholarship, where each recipient was given $1,500 for college expenses. In addition, Travis CU partnered with the Solano County Office of Education, a local radio station, and the Food Bank of Contra Costa and Solano in support of the regional Stuff the Bus Campaign, where participants donated and collected school supplies for local children in need.

Ventura County CU has stepped up its efforts in the nationwide Don't Tax My Credit Union campaign, emailing members to the Connect For The Cause website, placing banners on its website, utilizing statement stuffers, having staff wear T-shirts, sending out a special message from its CEO, and reaching out to local credit unions to issue a joint-awareness campaign.

San Diego County CU set a new Guinness World Record for the most paper collected in 24 hours when it shredded 165,000 pounds of paper this past summer at the Qualcomm Stadium parking lot in San Diego's Mission Valley. Members, families, friends, and the public brought boxes of old documents to get rid of. The donations collected ($5,000) benefitted the San Diego Humane Society and Society for Prevention to Cruelty to Animals.

The annual Richard Myles Johnson Foundation/CUNA Mutual Golf Tournament, held Aug. 19 at the Newport Beach Country Club in Newport Beach, CA, raised approximately $50,000, which is a $23,000 increase from the year before. Proceeds benefit the Richard Myles Johnson Foundation (RMJ), which provides support to California and Nevada credit unions’ financial literacy efforts.

California Coast FCU supported a five-week donation campaign that was led by the San Diego County Office of Educationn (SDCOE), where nearly 4,000 school-aged homeless children across San Diego County are able to start their academic year with much-needed school supplies. Through SDCOE grants and community donations, nearly 4,000 backpacks were filled with supplies and distributed to 35 school districts.

This year 426 entries were received, of which 152 earned awards for marketing excellence. San Francisco FCU awarded four scholarships worth $2,000 each to college-bound Bay Area students. The scholarships were based on applicants’ academic achievement, personal integrity, and active participation at their schools and local communities. San Francisco FCU also announced a new partnership with KNBR, home of the San Francisco 49ers radio broadcast, and a sponsorship of TLC for Kids Sports, a Bay Area community outreach program that improves kids’ sports fields. Through the partnership, the credit union will exclusively sponsor the Touchdowns for TLC feature during the 49ers post-game radio broadcast, and will participate in a number of TLC for Kids Sports events.

Pacific Marine CU took first place at the first-ever Credit Union Chili Challenge, which raised more than $10,000 for charities. Ten credit unions participated in the event, held at the Del Mar Thoroughbred Club Racetrack. By taking first place, Pacific Marine CU’s Chilis-a-Blazin team won $5,000 for the charity of their choice, Rady Children’s Hospital. The team also qualified to compete in the Homestyle Division of the 47th Annual International Chili Society (ICS) World’s Championship Chili Cook-off in Palm Springs, CA later this year.

Los Angeles Police FCU's new partnership with CU Realty Services to grow purchase mortgages is getting positive results: in the first month, 103 members registered for the program, and four transactions are in process. The credit union has branded the program Home Advantage, which allows members to search for homes, research neighborhoods, find a qualified real-estate agent, and earn a rebate at the closing of escrow.

United FCU is holding a groundbreaking ceremony in early September in Reno, NV on a 6,500-square-foot, full-service branch—a $2 million project. The event will bring together local dignitaries, residents, and credit union officials.

Nearly 50 LBS Financial CU employees, friends, and family participated in at least one of the credit union’s beach clean-up events throughout 2013 in the City of Long Beach's Adopt-a-Beach program. The credit union stands committed to cleaning up its selected beach a minimum of three times per year, and finished its final beach clean-up in July.

Point Loma CU has awarded scholarships to three high school students as part of its 16th annual scholarship program. They each received $2,500, with the possibility of additional awards if they maintain a full course load with at least a 2.75 GPA.

Arrowhead CU launched its new mobile app and online banking platform with the help of 10 local college students—the ArrowGeeks—who went through intensive training, held several member labs, and are now available in Arrowhead branches to assist members. Within one week, the credit union experienced 16,000 downloads. Arrowhead CU also held its third blood drive in the past 12 months, donating nearly 100 pints of blood to local hospitals over that period.

Redwood CU has named Cynthia Negri chief lending officer, a newly-created position that sets strategic direction for all of the credit union's lending programs. Redwood CU has also added a mobile check deposit app available for Android and iOS devices.

South Bay CU took the phrase team player to a new level when it created a second-quarter baseball season of in-house competition to increase consumer loans. Fifteen South Bay CU employees were divided into red and blue teams that were captained by experienced loan closers, with the frontline and support staff enthusiastically working to gain points to get on base. The baseball strategy paid off, as South Bay CU's monthly average funding for consumer loans increased by 350 percent from the previous four-year monthly average.

America's Christian CU has completed its merger of Lutheran Credit Union of America, with a location in Brea, CA added as the newest branch for America's Christian. America's Christian CU also awarded its quarterly adoption grant to the Lyles family, who is adopting a girl from the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Altura CU employees and members recently rallied together to collect school supplies for 36 local school children—part of the Riverside County Department of Mental Health’s Parent Support and Training Program called Fill a Backpack. Within two weeks, Altura CU collected more than 20 backpacks and filled 15 boxes with supplies. Altura CU also awarded member Kasey McCall $500 via the credit union's You’re Gonna Love This Card promotion. Additionally, Altura CU Advisor Christopher Tavares was recognized with a 2012 Gold Pacesetter Award from CUSO Financial Services for his outstanding performance in investment services.

Meriwest CU has appointed Brian Hennessey as CFO. He brings more than 30 years of experience in financial management. Meriwest CU also helped about 15 kids of the Police Activities League in Richmond, CA start their own business, dubbed The Fun Time Cookie Company, where participating students learned how to manage the business process, including purchasing materials, marketing, and sales, resulting in a 53 percent profit margin.

Cal State L.A. FCU and Northeast Community FCU were recipients of low-income credit union grants given by the National Credit Union Administration (NCUA) to expand services, offer new loan products, and provide educational opportunities to members. A total of 126 low-income credit unions received more than $871,000 in funding through the 2013 Community Development Revolving Loan Fund grant round.

The Department of Financial Institutions (DFI) and California's Department of Corporations merged to form the Department of Business Oversight (DBO), which will house a new Division of Financial Services (DFS). The DFS will oversee the operations of state-licensed financial institutions, including credit unions. The reorganization also required new gubernatorial appointments. Gov. Jerry Brown named Jan Owen as the commissioner of DBO. Owen was formerly acting commissioner of the DFI from 1999-2000.

Ventura County CU Chairman Roxanne Ostrem was honored with the Global Women's Leadership Network's (GLWN) 2013 Athena Award during the World Credit Union Conference in Ottawa, Canada, for her outstanding achievement in support of credit union development, particularly as it relates to credit union women's leadership development worldwide. Ostrem is a founding member of GWLN and has been a credit union advocate for more than 20 years.

Patelco CU has named Erin Mendez, a senior executive with 35 years of experience in the financial services sector and other industries, as new CEO. She will assume leadership of the $4 billion credit union in mid-August.

San Francisco FCU participated in the San Francisco Pride Parade on June 30. The credit union was slated to have a fully decorated double-decker bus entered into the parade, but a last-minute breakdown prompted the employees, their friends, and families to remove the banner from the bus and march on foot instead. San Francisco FCU used the slogan “Your Pride is Our Pride” as its message for the Pride 2013 program and other related festivities.

Western CUNA Management School (WCMS) celebrated the graduation of nearly 90 students on July 25 at Pomona College in Claremont, CA, of which seven students graduated with high honors and four with honors. The graduates raised $13,000 during an auction event by the three classes, and the 2013 graduating class raised $79,000 over the past three years—the largest class gift in WCMS history. The graduation was preceded the week before by the annual Richard Myles Johnson Colloquium in Credit Union Philosophy night, featuring keynote speaker John Tippets, former CEO of North Island CU in San Diego and American Airlines FCU in Texas.

Downey FCU donated $1,700 to the Arc of Los Angeles and Orange Counties, South East Area Animal Control Authority (SEAACA), and Downey PTA H.E.L.P.S through the credit union's "Cares" program, where members can donate $5 of their new membership fee to one of the three charities. During the first six months of this year, the program raised more than $1,700.

Stanford FCU will debut its new mobile branch and ATM at the Palo Alto Festival of the Arts on Aug. 24-25. Dubbed MobiCU, the branch will be a full-service, fully staffed credit union branch and ATM that will travel to community and Stanford University events, and make weekly visits to companies the credit union serves.

Credit Union House—the stately townhouse near Capitol Hill in Washington D.C. that's owned by every state credit union trade association—recently released a fundraising update for California credit unions. As of mid-July, these credit unions had contributed the following amounts, propelling Credit Union House to 34 percent of its California fundraising goal: Cabrillo CU, $2,500; CoastHills FCU, $1,000; LBS Financial CU, $1,000; SchoolsFirst FCU, $10,000; SkyOne FCU, $500; Southern California Postal CU, $250; StarOne CU, $2,500; and United Local CU, $750.

First Financial CU's subsidiary, TSA Special Member Services, has offered members discount tickets this summer to some of Southern California’s favorite theme parks, water parks, aquariums, as well as local movie theaters and other entertainment venues. The effort is part of the credit union's goal to give value back to members.

Meriwest CU—as a member of the Federal Home Loan Bank—played a role in the development of four recently built Habitat for Humanity homes, sponsoring an affordable housing grant worth $140,000 for Habitat for Humanity of East Bay and Silicon Valley. The grant was divided between four Habitat homeowners, as they used the funds for down payment assistance.

Arrowhead CU has been recognized with 10 honors so far this year, including those from the Marketing Association of Credit Unions (MAC), CUNA Marketing and Business Development Council, and a Service Industry Advertising Award (SIAA). The top honors came in the form of MAC’s gold medals for the best Website Redesign and Direct Mail, and CUNA’s "Best in Category" Diamond Award for an Email Campaign. The top-winning direct mail and email awards were both for a Holiday Loan campaign that yielded a 7.3-percent response rate and a 1,418-percent return on investment.

Golden 1 CU has hired Richard Musci as senior vice president and chief lending officer. Musci has more than 20 years of experience in the financial services industry. Golden 1 CU also awarded a total of $320,000 in renewable scholarships to 33 full-time students who plan to attend an accredited, nonprofit two- or four-year college or university in California.

Mission FCU has purchased Autoland, an auto-buying provider that serves more than 200 credit unions across the nation. The transaction was part of the National Credit Union Administration's (NCUA) liquidation process of Telesis Community CU. Telesis had purchased Autoland in 2007 and subsequently sold minor interests, retaining a controlling interest.

Los Angeles Police FCU, in response to continued economic challenges, recently created Member Benefits, a new program which rewards members who are most invested in the success of their credit union, while asking those who are not engaged to help pay their fare share. The resulting program is a hybrid model, encompassing tenets of both relationship pricing and product bundling in a manner which rewards members for their use of credit union products and services. As a result, the credit union has seen favorable results in the first six months of the program’s implementation.

Greater Nevada CU recently received a Best in Video ACE Award from the Reno Tahoe Chapter of the American Marketing Association for its It's Time television commercial, which marks the third consecutive year the credit union has won an ACE Award for its TV spots. Greater Nevada CU also announced it plans to convert to the Open Solutions DNA account processing platform from Fiserv Inc., citing the platform’s open architecture and ability to integrate other Fiserv solutions in its decision—a decision that's slated to help better serve its members.

Educational Employees CU donated $24,250 to help Central Valley Honor Flight, a nonprofit organization, send World War II veterans from the Central Valley of California to World War II Veteran's Memorial located in Washington, D.C. that was built in their honor. The credit union pledged $50 to the organization for every auto loan financed from mid to late May. Educational Employees CU also recently awarded a total of $100,000 in grants to members for college expenses during the 2013-2014 school year.

Kinecta FCU announced that Jeffry Yonemura was elected chairman of the credit union's board of directors following its 73rd Annual Meeting. Kinecta FCU also hired Luis Peralta as COO of Nix Financial, where he will oversee retail, operations, marketing, and product development for the subsidiary of Kinecta. Additionally, Kinecta FCU promoted Steven Glouberman to senior vice president, chief risk officer, and general counsel. Kinecta FCU also recently partnered with Family FCU and the Richard Myles Johnson Foundation to host a Bite of Reality fair in Wilmington, CA, where kids test drive the real world with a job, money, and the freedom to make their own financial decisions.

Altura CUemployees, friends, and family recently climbed Mt. Rubidoux in Riverside, CA as part of a national event, "Climb to Cure Duchenne," where 48 participants raised more than $3,000 to fight a rare and lethal form of Muscular Dystrophy. Altura CU also awarded member Carrie Winge $500 for using her Altura Visa Debit Card to make a purchase—part of a monthly promotion. Additionally, Altura CU is rolling out a new fleet of state-of-the-art ATMs throughout Riverside County—new envelope-free teller machines. The credit union also announced that its scholarship foundation is awarding a combined $38,000 to several local graduating high school seniors.

Xceed Financial FCU launched a new series of incentive programs earlier this year to encourage members to use electronic statements, featuring a sweepstakes that awarded a 27-inch iMac computer as the grand prize, along with other prizes. E-statement usage has increased 20 percent since last year. Xceed Financial CU also completed its merger with Safeway Los Angeles FCU in June, moving more than 16,000 member accounts over to Xceed's system.

CUDL, the credit union industry’s largest auto lending network, has expanded to 10,000 auto dealers. Its network now includes more than 1,050 credit unions, representing 35 million members nationwide, with credit unions experiencing 16 percent growth in funded auto loans since the beginning of the year.
