Redwood CU and SchoolsFirst FCU have increased their support of Filene Research Institute with new silver benefactor relationships. Participation in the Go Silver! membership program earns credit unions a credit up to $10,000 towards an appreciation program—ranging from impact solutions and technology strategic planning to community engagement and extra membership support.

Meriwest CU sponsored a $25,000 Federal Home Loan Bank (FHLB) Affordable Housing Grant for the Atta Family to complete financing on their home that was recently constructed by Habitat for Humanity East Bay Silicon Valley. FHLB of San Francisco uses their profits to support affordable housing projects where institutions such as Meriwest CU can sponsor Affordable Housing Program applications from community development organizations with residential projects in need of financing.

Pacific Marine CU EDM Manager Lynette Chubb placed fifth at the World’s Championship Homestyle Chili Cookoff in November. Chubb's winning streak started when she previously won the First Annual XDI CU Chili Challenge in August 2013.

Travis CU representatives testified before the California Senate Banking Committee about its new loan product that's geared to help the unbanked and under-banked Latino community access financial education and improve credit. Travis CU Director of Corporate Communications Sherry Cordonnier and Senior Vice President and Chief Loan Officer Stacy Fifield were invited to testify before the Senate Committee on Banking and Financial Institutions, which held an informational hearing in mid-November on various nonprofit and community based organizations with small-dollar loan products. In other news, Travis CU announced plans for this year’s Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program that offers free tax help for seniors, as well as individuals and families who earn up to $52,000.

Fourteen credit unions in California ordered Credit Unions for Kids (CU4Kids) "holiday icons" and joined the efforts of dozens of other credit unions across the nation to raise money for their local Children's Miracle Network Hospitals. The Holiday Icon campaign was an easy turnkey way for credit unions and members to rally behind a great cause.

Credit Unions for Kids and CO-OP Financial Services teamed up this past holiday season to create a program that allows credit union members to make a donation to Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals while conducting their business at participating CO-OP ATM locations.

California CU gave 180 students from Hoover High School in Glendale a “Bite of Reality” on Dec. 4 when they attended an interactive financial education simulation designed to teach them how to manage money. The program was offered by the Richard Myles Johnson Foundation.

Kinecta FCU promoted Maria Japardi to first vice president of human resources. Japardi has served as Kinecta’s vice president of human resources since June 2006, and in her new role she will oversee the design, implementation, and maintenance of the organization’s human capital strategies and key human resources initiatives.

South Bay CU participated in the #GivingTuesday movement on Dec. 3, where employees offered members random acts of kindness and encouraged them to do the same. The event coincided with the credit union's “Cheer for Children” toy drive. The nationwide #GivingTuesday began in 2012 when organizers sought to establish a day to encourage charitable giving at the start of the holiday season as an alternative to the consumer excess of Black Friday and Cyber Monday.

Point Loma CU sold $1 pink ribbons at its branches in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, raising $5,000. Proceeds went to UC San Diego Moores Cancer Center, one of 41 National Cancer Institute-designated Comprehensive Cancer Centers in the country.

Christian Community CU donated $5,000 to the Mission Aviation Fellowship (MAF) Disaster Response Fund and $5,000 to International Ministries' "One Great Hour of Sharing" to help families affected by Typhoon Haiyan in the Philippines. Credit union employees also participated in two charitable causes—Operation Christmas Child and Children's Miracle Network—where staff donated toys, school supplies, hygiene items, and clothing to the former, and $600 to the latter though Miracle Jeans Day.

Desert Valleys FCU hosted its Second Annual Member Appreciation Day and fundraiser for the U.S. Marine Corps Toys for Tots campaign in December, featuring a visit from Santa Claus, plus a free photo for anyone who donated a toy or made a cash donation to the campaign. Desert Valleys FCU also made a $250 donation to the Police and Community Together program to offer child identification services to parents after their children met with Santa Claus.

Patelco CU hired Jose Jimenez as senior vice president of risk management and Kenn Darling as chief credit officer. Patelco CU also organized a "Bite of Reality" event in December, where more than 200 Roseville High School students took part in an interactive financial simulation aimed at teaching teens about how to manage money in real-world scenarios. The program was offered by the Richard Myles Johnson Foundation.

Arrowhead CU team members delivered gifts to Children Deserve Success for more than 120 children who are homeless in San Bernardino County. More than 100 employees fulfilled the children's wishes for gifts, such as a new bike, video games, clothing, and other items.

NuVision FCU branches across Los Angeles and Orange counties served as collection sites for the U.S. Marine Corps’ Toys for Tots program through December. Fourteen branches collected new unwrapped toys donated by NuVision FCU employees, members, and the public. This was the credit union's eighth year participating in the program.

San Francisco FCU, Delta Schools FCU, and Patelco CU participated with 15 other credit unions in the Credit Unions for Kids annual golf tournament, raising $60,000 for Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals, with 2013 being the best year yet. Also, San Francisco FCU member Monet Allard won $5,000 in the Financial Fitness Challenge, a year-long contest that encouraged members to make positive financial changes and reach goals with the help of credit union products and services.

Golden 1 CU awarded $368,400 in grants to 21 nonprofits in the Sacramento-Central Valley region. The credit union’s Community Grant Program supports programs that provide assistance to young adults emancipated from the state’s foster care system, and literacy programs that help students develop reading skills. Golden 1 CU also took immediate action to protect members who may have been affected by the recent security breach at Target retail stores. About 67,000 Golden 1 CU members were affected and notified via email and letters so they can replace potentially impacted cards.

Altura CU member Jessie De La Cruz won $500 in the credit union's “You’re Gonna Love This Card” debit card promotion, making him the 11th person to win. Altura CU also introduced a new signature loan promotion to help members cope with extra holiday expenses. The “Dashing Through the Dough” offer featured interest rates as low as 6.99 percent and amounts up to $15,000.

Nearly 175 LBS Financial CU employees donated hundreds of toys, gifts, and clothing to children and parents served by the Needy Family Project in Cerritos and surrounding areas. The donations were collected during the credit union's annual holiday breakfast in December.
