More than $700,000 was raised during the 2014 Credit Unions for Kids Wine Auction on March 14, where 418 attendees from California and Nevada placed their bids for a range of high-end wines, vacation packages, memorabilia, venue tickets, and entertainment packages at the Laguna Cliffs Marriott in Dana Point, CA, all for the sake of Children's Miracle Network Hospitals (CMN).

Financial Center CU won “Best of Show” in the annual Credit Union National Association Diamond Awards. The credit union’s “Eye Candy” auto loan postcards earned high marks in the “Cut” Award for Most Edgy category. The objective of the postcard series was to keep Financial Center CU in the forefront of members’ minds for auto loans, especially members in the 20 to 45 age range. Utilizing internet meme-style messaging, “bleeped” language, holograms, and even a bicycle-riding Santa, the goal was to achieve a 4 percent response rate and gross $4.7 million in auto loans.

First Financial CU celebrated its best year in its eight-decade history. The credit union’s net income for 2013 was more than $4 million, and it achieved a 98.1 percent Member Service Quality score. This was the best score recorded in the credit union’s 15 years of measuring service quality. The 2013 results were announced to staff during a special event at the House of Blues in Hollywood.

Travis CU in partnership with Security-Shred, Inc., is hosting a free shred-day event on April 26 at its headquarters. Solano County residents and small businesses can bring up to five boxes or paper grocery bags of documents to be shredded, as well as take home tips and resources they need to help protect their confidential information. E-waste materials can also be dropped off for recycling.

Redwood CU was named the “Large Business of the Year” by the San Rafael Chamber of Commerce for its outstanding contributions to the community and nonprofit organizations. In staffing news, Redwood CU has hired Meg Cadiz as its new nonprofit community program manager. In this role, Cadiz is responsible for all aspects of the credit union’s nonprofit community efforts, including planning, budgeting, building, and executing support programs. She will also oversee the Redwood CU Community Fund to support financial literacy and wellness opportunities for local individuals and businesses. Robin Ashford has also been named manager of the credit union’s Point Arena branch. She has more than 20 years’ experience in customer service, and has worked in financial services for the past seven years. Ashford takes the place of previous Point Arena branch manager, Lindsay Jones, who is now headed to the Napa office as the new branch manager. There she oversees member service, staff management and training, and daily branch operations, as well as business development, community relations, and volunteer efforts in Napa. Redwood CU has also recruited Tom Hubert as wealth management program director to manage the daily operations of the credit union’s CUSO Financial Services Investment program and staff.

After hearing of an immediate need for baby supplies at HomeAid Inland Empire, the Arrowhead CU team collected enough items to fill a moving van. In other news, Arrowhead CU team members, including its President and CEO, Darin Woinarowicz, read Dr. Seuss to students in more than 30 classrooms.

Altura CU employees read to Riverside County elementary school children in support of Read Across America Day, a national literacy program designed to spur children to read more. In other news, Altura CU member Erik Smith won $500 simply for using his Altura Visa Debit Card as part of the Better Ways to Win promotion, which highlights the convenience of using the credit union’s debit card for everyday purchases. Altura CU President and CEO, Mark Hawkins, also recently joined the board of directors of the Riverside Community College District (RCCD) Foundation, which includes three community colleges, a training facility, and a culinary academy. The foundation supports RCCD programs and projects through fundraising and financial support. In other staff news, a team of 10 Altura CU employees volunteered at the recent Riverside Academic Decathlon, serving as proctors during the “Super Quiz” portion. The event attracted nearly 200 students from 18 high schools.

NuVision FCU announced its annual 2014 NuVision Scholarship Program to support local students pursuing post-secondary education. One $1,000 and six $500 scholarships will be awarded to students attending a four-year college or university, community college, or pursuing trade certification in a vocational or technical school. Last year’s program recipients included students from across Los Angeles and Orange counties.

Meriwest CU announced the annual winners of the 2013-2014 Essay Competition. This year’s topic challenged students to think about their future, how they would interact in the future economy, and what role a credit union might play. Eight winners were awarded a total of $3,350 to support their college educations.

allU.S. CU announced two new services to increase member experience: allU.S. Mobile Deposit allows members to manage accounts from the convenience of their mobile phone, and eTradeInBins allows members to sell their cars by putting it out to bid to dealers as an alternative to selling via a private party sale or going to the dealership. allU.S. CU also launched a My Savings Goal Pinterest contest where members pin a photo of their savings goals, such as a family vacation. Three lucky winners will be selected at random and will receive a gift card or a certificate of deposit. In staff news, allU.S. CU CEO Patrick Redo was named the newest board member of the First Mayor's House in Salinas. The board partners with local schools to give them the opportunity to learn about Salinas' first Mayor, Isaac Julian and his wife Sarah Mellett Harvey. The house is the only one in Salinas that operates as a museum and cultural heritage center for local school children.

Christian Community CU’s 2014 Scholarships for Success Program is awarding $50,000 in scholarships, in addition to multi-year scholarships of $1,000 per year. The scholarship program is open to members with a checking account and who are attending a college, university, or seminary for 2014-2015. Scholarships will be awarded by mid-May. In other news, Christian Community CU cardholders donated $32,000 in reward points to mission projects through the Points for Missions program. To date, the program has resulted in more than $137,000 in donations since it started four years ago.

The Honda FCU board has appointed chief operating officer, Steve Brandon, to succeed Jim Updike as the new chief executive officer beginning April 1, 2014. Updike will remain as an advisor to the credit union until his retirement. Brandon has been with the credit union for more than 22 years, previously working at Security Pacific Bank and Mitsubishi Bank.

First Financial CU’s Auto Buying program reached a record year in 2013—saving members more than $1 million. In addition, nearly 40 percent of the credit union’s monthly production came from members using the Auto Buying service. The credit union also showed its support for members of the Alpine Teachers Association on the strike line by taking water, refreshments, and other supplies.
