BROOKLYN—THE STRONGEST LITTLE GIRL!

Brooklyn Payne

Mark and Melanie Payne movingly shared their story of their daughter, Brooklyn (born at only 25 weeks, weighing 1 pound, 4 ounces), at last year’s news conference. At first, things looked dire for the first child of the Aggie (UC Davis) alums. At two months old, Brooklyn had her first surgery—a Patent Ductus Arteriosus (PDA) ligation to close a hole in her heart. Two eye surgeries followed. The Paynes spent months in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at UC Davis Children’s Hospital.

At the news conference, the couple said Brooklyn was doing well and developmentally on track. They thanked the hospital and its staff for all they did to help their daughter. Mark and seven members of his family later ran in the 5K in the 2018 Run

Baby Brooklyn is now a year and a half old and Melanie says she’s medication-free.

“She’s the strongest little girl I know,” Melanie said. “I tell Mark all the time that she’s my hero. Just everything that she went thru that she will never know she went thru brings me to tears.”

MEET SASHA!

Sasha suffered a stroke during childbirth. Since she has been living with cerebral palsy and Children’s Hospital Los Angeles has become her second home. From emergency admittance for seizures to check-ups to physical therapy, CHLA has been there every step of the way. She first began designing and painting denim as therapy. Then she started creating custom denim designs to raise funds for CHLA.

On Oct. 13, 2018, for the first time, the 10-year-old’s designs donned a fashion runway, worn by celebrities such as Paris Hilton and actress/singer Victoria Justice. Her foundation, The Sasha Project LA, has raised $35,000 for the Mark Taper-Johnny Mercer Artists Program at CHLA, with a goal of giving thousands of kids like her access to art therapy. Way to give back Sasha.
