‘GAC’ Recap: CUs Have Effective Meetings with Regulators

This past week, the California and Nevada Credit Union Leagues and its members joined nealry 2,200 other credit union advocates in Washington, D.C. for the Governmental Affairs Conference (GAC). The Leagues facilitated approximately a dozen in-person meetings with regulators alongside its virtual programming from the preceding week to discuss important topics impacting the system. Additionally, attendees heard from dynamic keynote speakers with a variety of life experiences and viewpoints.

League highlights:

H.R. 6889, the Credit Union Board Modernization Act
A big announcement of the week was the introduction of the CUNA-League supported Credit Union Board Modernization Act (H.R. 6889), which reduces the mandatory monthly board meeting requirement to no fewer than six per year for federally chartered credit unions. Introduced by Rep. Juan Vargas (D-San Diego), the bill includes last year’s sponsors Reps. Katie Porter (D-Irvine) and Mark Amodei (R-Reno) as well as a healthy list of bipartisan co-sponsors. CULAC Sweepstakes
A grand total of $292,785 was raised toward the Credit Union Legislative Action Council (CULAC) during this year's Grand Sweepstakes, of which the California and Nevada Credit Union Leagues and its members raised $68,229—representing 23% of CULAC’s total! California raised $63,629, exceeding its goal of $50,000, and Nevada raised an impressive $4,600. Thank you to all donors (in-person and at home) and payroll deduction participants for your support.

In addition to the Sweepstakes, the Leagues held very successful events, including engaging with a dozen pro-business Democrats including Reps. Ami Bera (D-Sacramento), Lou Correa (D-Santa Ana), Julia Brownley (D-Ventura), Salud Carbajal (D-Central Coast), Susie Lee (D-Las Vegas), and others.
