A uniquely coordinated political communication to local credit union members jointly spearheaded by the Nevada Credit Union League and the Credit Union National Association (CUNA) in support of Sen. Catherine Cortez Masto (D-NV) won a 2023 Reed Award this week for political campaigning and grassroots advocacy during the 2022 mid-term election season.
This particular Reed Award recognizes excellence in political campaigning, grassroots, and advocacy, with the League and CUNA winning for “Best Mail Piece for Independent Expenditure for House and Senate — Democratic.”
“Our League is truly honored to be recognized with this unique award,” said Jennifer Denoo, chair of the League and CEO of Great Basin FCU. “This particular race was one of our nation’s most watched.”
Cortez Masto’s election was a tight race from the beginning, so it was imperative to show credit union support for the senator, Denoo said. The senator has been a long-standing credit union champion for the past six years.
Coordinating with CUNA, the League’s political communication targeted 200,000 Nevada credit union members and highlighted Cortez Masto’s efforts to oppose taxation of credit unions, protect members’ financial data and personal privacy, and make it easier for credit unions to provide more affordable and consumer-friendly loans and services.
“Across the board, this was a significant win for credit union members,” Denoo said. “We could not be prouder.”
For CUNA, this recognition in conjunction with the League was one of two 2023 Reed Awards that the national association was honored with this week. CUNA also led efforts on a political advertisement during last election season that urged constituents to thank Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY), which won “Best Online Video for Public Affairs Campaign or Issue Advocacy.”
