20th Anniversary of CA/NV Leagues Agreement Celebrated at REACH

The 20th anniversary of the successful California and Nevada Credit Union Leagues partnership was celebrated Wednesday during the opening general session of the California and Nevada Credit Union Leagues’ REACH Conference at The Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas.

In September 1995, the California Credit Union League’s board of directors approved a management services agreement with the Nevada Credit Union League. It went into effect January 1, 1996. Under this still one-of-a-kind agreement California provides a range of services to Nevada credit unions while allowing the two leagues to remain separate entities.

Then-California League President and CEO David L. Chatfield became president and CEO of both leagues, while the late Glen Reese—the Nevada League president and CEO at the time—stayed on as a consultant. The Nevada League retained (and continues to retain) its own board and government affairs committee.

On Wednesday, Nevada Credit Union League Board Chairman Wally Murray called the partnership “wildly effective, especially in the area of advocacy, which is widely regarded as the most important activity of credit union trade associations.”

He added the partnership came about because of the “efforts and vision on a single individual”: David Chatfield.

Chatfield told the audience that while a merger was considered, “it was clear to us that maintaining the critical advocacy effectiveness, the culture, and governance of the Nevada League was a very important aspect of what we intended to do.

“The management agreement strengthens the operational base for the California League, supports, and enhances cooperative league activities, such as this conference,” Chatfield continued. “In other words, it was then, and still remains a win-win solution that preserves the leadership and cultures of both leagues, and incorporates the best elements of each.”
