California and Nevada Credit Union Leagues President and CEO Diana Dykstra welcomed attendees to the first-ever Virtual REACH 2020, thanking them for their participation and celebrating their COVID-19 and natural disaster response in service to members across both states during 2020.

“March came upon us, and COVID-19 arrived,” Dykstra said. “The fear and panic of the unknown was unchartered territory for all of us, but credit unions immediately responded and focused on the safety of their members and staff, kept branches open, and established remote workforces. We have seen thoughtful and inspiring leadership throughout this extraordinary year from all of you.”

She said more than $24 billion in financial relief and emergency loans had been made by credit unions across California and Nevada over the past eight months in response to the economic slowdown, as well as 3 million fee waivers and an additional $1.8 billion in congressional Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) loan-grants through The CARES Act.

When the wildfires hit so many areas across California, credit unions stepped up again, she said. “You responded as a community resource and provided amazing collaborative assistance” as more than 4 million acres burned across the state from summer into autumn.

Now, the economy is top of mind going into late 2020 and early 2021, with high unemployment rates and many small businesses struggling. Dykstra said she knows credit unions will continue their outstanding service to members and find ways to continue providing relief.

“I am so honored to work with an inspiring group of professionals that change people’s lives on a daily basis,” Dykstra said. “I want to thank you for joining us during REACH 2020.”
