Five California CUs Win State-Level CUNA Awards

Five California Credit Union League member credit unions have won first place in the state-level 2023 Credit Union National Association (CUNA) Awards. These credit unions will now advance to the national competition.

This year’s California state winners are:

Dora Maxwell $1 Billion+
Winner: KeyPoint CU
Project: KeyPoint CU Economic Empowerment Initiative, a unique collaboration between the credit union, Chambers of Commerce and nonprofits to uplift marginalized individuals, including the homeless, impoverished families, the underbanked, and minorities, to break the cycle of poverty.

Dora Maxwell $50-$250 Million
Winner: Delta Schools CU
Project: The Girls Empowerment program involved 280 8th grade girls preparing to transition into high school. The credit union worked with the Rotary Club of Oakley to bring five diverse women to speak with these young people about how they have found success.

Desjardins Adult $1 Billion+
Winner: Patelco CU
Project: Overall commitment to serving most vulnerable communities with financial education post-pandemic, including ScoreUp Credit Builder Loan, BankUp (similar to second chance checking) and ITIN Lending.

Desjardins Youth $50-$250 Million
Winner: Delta Schools CU
Project: Overall commitment to bringing financial education and budgeting to its field of membership through partnerships with organizations such as the Richard Myles Johnson Foundation.

Desjardins Youth $1 Billion+
Winner: Golden 1 CU
Project: Financial Wellness Challenge, its proprietary budget simulation workshop that teaches students about financial well-being and budgeting.

Desjardins Adult Less than $50 Million
Winner: Comunidad Latina FCU
Project: Seguro Financiero, a six-week comprehensive financial education program developed in partnership with Templo Calvario.

Louise Herring $1 Billion+
Winner: Patelco CU
Project: Internal and External Fraud Resource Centers that raises awareness on detecting and preventing fraud and scams.
